The "Auto trim" menu item is usable only when there is at least one object on the canvas. Click the "Auto trim" menu item, the program will find the smallest region that includes all the objects on the canvas and clip the canvas by the region.

The "trim by the selected area" menu item is usable only when you have selected an area on the canvas. Click the "trim by the selected area" menu item, the program will clip the canvas by the selected area.
